Gagandeep Singh, known as Singh, was born in Punjab, India, in 1992 and raised in Los Angeles. Largely self-taught, he studied art at California State University, Northridge, with a focus on contemporary figurative painting. His continued study of figurative painting has included instruction with Sean Cheetham, Nick Alm, and Andrii Kateryniuk.

His work is rooted in observation and the quiet presence of the human figure. Through portraiture, interiors, still life, and landscape, Singh is drawn to moments of stillness, reflection, and emotional restraint. Rather than constructing overt narratives, he focuses on the subtle tension between a subject and the space surrounding them, allowing gesture, posture, light, and atmosphere to carry psychological weight.

His paintings balance careful structure with loose, economical brushwork. Form is built through measured value, restrained color, and selective detail, while softened edges and open passages preserve a sense of immediacy. The figure often appears suspended in thought or solitude, observed without spectacle and grounded in ordinary experience.

Influenced by the visual restraint and psychological depth found in the work of Velázquez, Antonio López García, Nick Alm, and Andrew Wyeth, Singh approaches realism as a way of looking slowly and attentively. His work seeks less to describe a subject than to remain present with it, allowing quiet human states to emerge through sustained observation.
